End of the rainbow

This is End of the Rainbow by Jody Glick. You probably have never heard of her, I sure hadn't.

And, in my opinion, this is great art.

In November last year, I found End of the Rainbow plunked on a plastic fold-out table at the Waverley Art School show amongst hundreds of other paintings, drawings, sculptures and more. The scene felt more like artsy garage sale than an art show. But maybe that's what made End of the Rainbow so unforgettable.

In the months following my visit, it's the only piece that would stick with me.

Looking at the sculpture, it dawned on me that the story about the rainbow and the pot of gold could be about life and death. The rainbow being life's journey and the gold being what is at the end of life - death.

As I paused in front of this reflective golden amorphous mass, I took away something unexpected but needed: permission to mourn and feel sadness. It also gave me perspective on how grateful I am to be alive and well and living on the rainbow.

Thank you Jody Glick, whoever you are.
